Overview: Thyroidectomy is the surgical removal of all or part of your thyroid gland (butterfly shaped gland located at the base of your neck). Thyroid gland is responsible for producing hormones that regulate your metabolism. Your doctor may recommend thyroidectomy to treat disorders, such as cancer, non-cancerous enlargement of the thyroid (goiter) and overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism).Learn More
There are three different approaches to thyroidectomy.
Conventional thyroidectomy: In this procedure your surgeon will make an incision in the center of your neck to directly access your thyroid gland.
Transoral thyroidectomy: In this procedure your surgeon will make an incision inside your mouth instead of neck.
Endoscopic thyroidectomy: In this procedure your surgeon will make smaller incisions in the neck. Next he/she will insert surgical instruments and a small video camera through the incision. The camera inside will guide your surgeon through the procedure.
